Guest Speaker Reflections
Q)
What reflections do you have about the conversations with representatives of the Cunningham Township Supervisor's Office, the Phoenix Drop-In Center, and Courage Connection? How did their visits—individually or collectively—contribute to your understanding of social justice work in our own community? What would you like to learn next about how housing issues are being addressed in our community?
A)
I thoroughly enjoyed all the guest speakers that came to visit our class this semester. I learned something different from each and every one of their presentations, and I now feel that I have a better understanding of the ways these organizations are supporting people in our community. That being said, learning about the myriad of options out there, makes me want to know if there are more organizations like these , and how I can contribute to their work. Overall, all of the organizations who came to visit us truly impacted my understanding of social justice in general and the social justice organizations here in my own community. If I am sincere, I was not aware of these organizations' outreach in my community before this class. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the guest speakers we have had in this class. The main thing that all of these organizations showed me is that there is still overwhelming support for those who are less fortunate in this community. Moving into the future, I would like to learn more about organizations like Cunningham Township Office, Phoenix Drop-in Center, and Courage Connection. This class has already done a wonderful job in showing me the resources available and it only makes me want to learn more about them. Something I would like to know more about as we proceed through the semester is of other resources there are specifically for immigrants and refugees who are new to the community. I know that there are some bilingual and immigrant programs within the organizations that visited us, and that is great. I want to help immigrants and refugees as much as possible because being a child of immigrant parents has shown me that there are certain things that these people need help with that may be different to the needs of citizens.
